When I think about camp and what it means to me there are so many things I think about it almost becomes jumbled in my head. I’ll try to un-jumble (not sure that is a word) some of it for you.
Camper Friendships
As a camper, camp was that place I came to for a month and was around friends from different places. It was like a huge spend the night party. I came to camp with girls from all over the south. I met Frances, our camp mom, here at Skyline!! I must say, it is amazing working with your best friend!!!
Counselor Friendships
As a counselor, camp was the place I wanted to be so I could give other girls the same wonderful experience I had. I formed close relationships with other young women I worked with during those summers. I am still in contact with some of them, Sallye Campbell Lucas and I text and pray for each other, our families etc.
Owner Experience
As an owner its different. Yes, I see all of the friendships forming and that is still such a big part of camp, but what I love the most and what means the most is watching campers and counselors grow spiritually. Camp is that place for some girls to come and hear God’s word and deepen their relationship with Him. For others, it is where they first hear of the love of Christ and want to know Him and still for others it is where they come to rekindle their love for Him.
I tell our counselors and admin, camp is the last frontier for girls to be girls. I love that we offer an unplugged experience. This means they get to have true, Christ centered relationships that go beyond a text message or post to social media. Like the SEC slogan, “It just means more.”
Camp, there is nothing like it! The meaning of camp can be overwhelming, in a good way. It’s hard to see the keyboard for the tears I must say.
I would love to hear what camp means and has meant to all of you!!
In Him,
Sally
Sally is a Rome, Georgia native and started attending Camp Skyline in 1977. She loved the camp experience so much she wanted to give back, so she became a counselor. In 1997 she and her husband Larry purchased camp and haven’t looked back!
