What makes Skyline special to you?

  • Skyline holds such a special place in my heart. For me, it’s a place of tradition. It’s been a part of my family for generations, starting with my mother. We currently have a niece who is going every Summer and now that I am a girl mom, I just cannot wait for the Summer that Ruby gets to start going. I think camp is also something to depend on every Summer. The expectations of the activities and the girls you would see every year, the camp fires and the food. It’s this atmosphere that you just crave and get giddy about.

What is your favorite camp memory?

  • There is SO many great memories!!!!! One of my favorites was probably the Summer that I was Captain of the Troopers, my sister was Co-Captain, it was sock war. I remember never being found and I believe we won the game that session. I think also having a leadership position just makes you feel so proud of yourself, to have a group of girls so passionate, feeling close and working together. It was powerful — in a good way.
  • I would say another memory that I loved so much was winning the horse show. To be honored in an activity that you were great at was another big confidence booster.

What life skills did you learn at camp?

  • So many!!! Communicating/social skills, active skills, leadership and most importantly, confidence in who you are/what you stand for and confidence in talking about God.

How has Skyline’s mission statement, “Enriching young girls in God, relationships and self”, impacted your life?

  • I feel like at such a young age, the concept of Jesus and understanding the Bible can be hard to digest for many but, having morning watch, camp fires, prayers at every meal and church on Sunday - the atmosphere and routine of camp encourages that relationship between the camper and God and makes it all not so intimidating. The first time I shared my belief of God was with a camper in Riverside. And to share was scary but, it felt great!!! I think all of this ties into the skills question above. I would say every single year of camp I’ve ever attended from being a camper up to being a counselor, this mission statement has always been achieved!!! And as an adult, being married and as a parent this routine of having God at the center of our lives and teaching our kids this routine is very important to both my husband and I!

As a Skyline Hero, what advice do you give college students interested in your field?

  • WAS in the field of hospitality management, I’m currently a stay at home mom as well as working a lot in our community. My advice would be to get out there in your field and find that niche of what makes you happiest. We all have personal gifts and I believe you’re truly happy and the best version of yourself if you are using God’s gift to yourself to make the world a better and happier place.
  • I’ve always struggled personally to figure out what I wanted to do in life and still do. I think that’s why I find community work so rewarding and most of all, becoming a mom has been the best gift and job of all. During the times of uncertainty, I advise you to surround yourself with friends and family to keep you motivated and lifted up. Stay connected with people everywhere you go and lastly, pray to God for guidance and patience.

Grace Curry Davis was a camper for 5 years and a counselor for 3 years. She was a Trooper through and through. Her love for camp still continues today through her donations to the Skyline Foundation. It’s easy to see the impact Skyline had on her life. Thank you Grace for your dedication!
